In May 2003, Dr. Christopher Lewis spent one month working in a small rural hospital in Tanzania, East Africa as part of his global health training for the University of Cincinnati. he frequently witnessed villagers being carried in form the outlying villages, having died while trying to make the arduous journey to the Shirati Hospital for help. Village Life Outreach Project (VLOP) was born from a desire to partner with communities in the remote, surrounding region to improve conditions of Life, Health, and Education, while bringing lessons learned in Africa back home to our own communities.
Village Life's designated teams for Life, Health, and Education have created exciting projects such as water purification systems for access to clean water, distribution of mosquito nets to prevent malaria, and a school lunch program to combat sever malnutrition in school- age children.
By illuminating and joining the struggle against poverty, disease and malnutrition in Africa, VLOP hope to also strengthen our own local communities by exemplifying the ideas of humanitarianism, service and social responsibility.
The BowTie design is based on the shape of the SSB bricks used to build the Roche Health Center. This interlocking pattern represents the interconnectedness and stability of the Village Life Outreach Project organization. In addition, the shape of the bricks is united with three segments, similar to the three Village Life committees: Life, Health, and Education.
