They annually prepare more than 35,000 youth to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Scouting provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.
The square knot is known as the “joining knot” because it joins two ropes together and it’s the first knot that Scouts learn when they join the Boy Scouts of America. As the basic knot used in first aid, a square knot is taught very early in Boy Scouts curriculum and has long represented the ideal of service.
Since 1947, the square knot has been used as the recognition symbol for the awards that adult leaders in Scouting earn for their service to youth. With over 1 million adult members providing service to more than 3 million youth on an annual basis, the mission of Scouting and the legacy of the square knot to “join” youth with unparalleled character education.
