Cincinnati Flag

Cincinnati. The Queen City. Home of the Reds. Porkopolis. City of Seven Hills. The Paris of America.

If the many nicknames for this great city are any indication, Cincinnati means a lot of things to a lot of people. Cincinnati’s economy and entrepreneurial spirit is matched only by its impressive cultural and arts district.

The Cincinnati flag, prominently displayed in government buildings and, most noticeably, in Fountain Square, was the result of a design contest in 1895. Not formally adopted as the official flag until 1940, the blue color represents the Ohio River. The red “C” stands for Cincinnati, and the Buckeye leaf on top is for the State of Ohio. The symbols in the center of the flag represent important qualities of a city. The winged rod signifies commerce and the serpents represent wisdom. The scales signify justice and the sword represents authority and power. Lastly the phrase “Juncta Juvant” translates from Latin to “Unity Assists” or “It’s better to work together.”

As an ode to the Queen City, the Cincinnati Flag BowTie was designed for City Beat’s Best of Cincinnati awards.

With your purchase of a BowTie, you are not only raising awareness, but $10 will be donated to the BowTie Foundation.
