Fox Lane Middle School
Imagine it is your first day of middle school and you want to look your best and decide to wear a BowTie. You are humiliated, hearing teasing comments, and seeing pointing glares. A peer notices your discomfort and offers to wear a tie with you the next day. He does, but you are sure he is bullying you and can’t even bring yourself to go to school…
This simple event became the inspiration for BowTie Fridays at Fox Lane Middle School. BowTie Friday continues to bring together students and staff to recognize how bullying comes in many forms and the distinguished representation of a BowTie makes everyone stand up a little straighter, a bit more proud, and aware of others.
The “Upstander” BowTie symbolizes how to be an upstander: one who avoids being a bystander when they see someone teasing, or being mean or inappropriate to, another person. The BowTie design was generated by Fox Lane students and encompasses the spirit of FLMS with the incorporation of the words Cooperation, Accountability, Respect, and Effort – character traits of an upstander.
With your purchase of a BowTie, you are not only raising awareness, but $10 will be donated to Fox Lane Middle School’s Upstander Anti-Bullying campaign.
