In late 2007, at the urging of a friend and colleague who had prostate cancer, Rick Lyke requested a prostate cancer screening during a routine physical.
At 47, without any symptoms or family history, Rick was diagnosed with prostate cancer. While recovering from surgery in April 2008, Rick formed Pints for Prostates as a way to encourage other men to get tested.
BowTies hold a special significance to Pints for Prostates, as they were the signature fashion statement for the friend who urged Rick to get screened. Michael Cunningham was a dapper, fun-loving, and creative man who lost his courageous multi-year battle with prostate cancer in 2011.
Few people recognize the fact that prostate cancer is 33% more common in men than breast cancer is in women. One in six American men will face the disease during their lifetimes. The good news is that with early detection, treatment for the disease is nearly 100% successful. However, nearly 34,000 American men died from the disease last year.
Pints for Prostates is a nonprofit organization that focuses on awareness programs to reach men through the universal language of beer. Their goal is to encourage men to take charge of their health and get prostate health screenings that can save their lives.
